This week in Starfish....

Posted 26/6/2016

This week in Starfish we have been learning about how to write instructions,  and some children in Year 1 have been editing and re-drafting these so they are clear for the reader to follow. We have also been  looking at the features of information texts in guided reading. In science we have started another fair test to see if plants grow without sunlight. We have set up two plates of cress seeds on paper towels and we have put one in the dark and one in the window to see if not having light makes any difference to their growth. After that, we predicted what we thought would happen and most children thought the seeds would still grow in the dark. In maths we have been learning to tell the time to the nearest 15 minutes, and some children have been learning time to 5 minutes intervals. We also celebrated Sports Day and it was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents there to support and enjoy the afternoon.

This week in Starfish we have been transforming our planters and through the kind support of many parent helpers our outside learning area looks vibrant and colourful! The children thoroughly enjoyed working with their grown ups to plant their chosen flowers. Meanwhile, our sunflower seeds are now seedlings and we have enjoyed watching them grow and learning about the parts of a plant as well as what factors help plants to grow healthily. Our cress investigation continues, with the cress in the cupboard growing well but turning an unhealthy yellow colour, with a very unappealing smell!!! However, our cress in the sunlight didn't grow at all due to drying out over the weekend, so we have been learning a lot about how seeds need more water if left in the sunlight, than seeds left in the dark. In response to this we are trying to grow a new set of cress seeds which have been sent home with one of our pupils to water over the weekend. In literacy, we have been writing explanation texts about the life cycle of  a sunflower and learning about the use of question marks when writing science investigation reports. In maths we have been measuring our seeds and seedlings to see how much they have grown.
